The Guardians' Throne - The First Magic Swordsman

Chapter 440: Correction

Chapter 440: Correction

“Brother… Please reconsider this,” Nyana said with her head down and with her eyes closed. “You can’t shoulder this alone… we need, the world needs to work together to face this new threat.”

Zaos realized what Nyana was thinking. Even if she, Cohnal, and Melisse decide to help him, the chance of things going wrong still was insanely high. Fighting humans in wars was something totally different from fighting a being that can orchestrate its own revival after death. The fate of the world was hanging in the balance… If they fail, millions of people might die if they fail… that was something that Nyana couldn’t consider without feeling her heart growing cold.

“Captain… Why did you kill the princess?” Melisse asked. “She was already too weak, right? If that is the case, then she…”

“I did it of my own volition,” Zaos said. “I didn’t want for a kid to be born in this world with such a burden on her… I understand your hesitation, and I don’t blame you. I am no longer your captain, so all of you can do whatever you think is right… I will do the same. So, let’s live our lives without any regrets.”

Nyana nodded. As much as she wanted to help Zaos, she couldn’t because her family was already suffering too much from one traitor. While she could understand Zaos’ reasons, it wouldn’t change the fact that her entire family would be punished for it if she deserts as well. Not to mention, she truly believed that only if everyone could work together they would be able to deal with the demon god.

Melisse and Cohnal didn’t know what to do because of their loyalty. While Cohnal believed now in what Zaos was preparing for, he couldn’t just follow him after everything that happened. Not to mention, he had the faith of two thousand men… he couldn’t betray the faith of those. Melisse also had the trust of many soldiers, and while she didn’t care much about that, she didn’t want to betray Cohnal. They were husband and wife and had been working together for decades… she couldn’t abandon him now.

Zaos could understand everyone’s choices, so he didn’t blame them for not wanting to help him. Instead of that, he felt proud that they decided to follow their own paths. So, Zaos slowly began to move away from them. There was no need to say goodbye. Zaos never did that before, after all. Attacking and destroying the supplies without making the bloody knights suffer the blame of that was impossible, so Zaos left that army behind while ignoring the fact that some soldiers looked at him leaving. Some of them imagined that Zaos was a spy that had infiltrated. Still, no one managed to chase him or even realize that he had talked with Nyana and the others.

“Hang in there, buddy,” Zaos said. “I promise you that tonight, you will rest for as long as you can.”

Zaos and Moody looked for the main army again. At that point in time, Zaos only had a single option: accept and do the heavy lifting all by himself. Even though he couldn’t face so many soldiers on his own while he tries not to kill anyone, he will have to try and pull that off. Once they returned, the demon god and his followers didn’t want to deal with many enemies, so Zaos couldn’t let things go as they had planned. Not to mention, he couldn’t let Milliendra, by any means necessary, feel guilty over the deaths caused by the actions of the demon god. Zaos couldn’t remember a single thing about his previous life, but the fact that he had two was enough to make him feel pretty lucky. Now he will do his best to let that child have a good life…

In the end, Zaos and Moody only found the main army three hours after sunset. Moody was exhausted, so Zaos let his partner rest under a nearby tree after fetching him some food and water. Once that was done, Zaos patted him, and then the atmosphere around him changed.

Zaos equipped his sword without unsheting it. Most likely, he will have to use the blade at some point to conserve his mana, but Zaos was planning to use that only at the last moment. It has been a while since he had fought against so many people, and while in the other moments he felt pumped, right now, he only felt annoyed. The demon god was just another human who had increased its lifespan to have his revenge against the people that wronged his people, Zaos could accept that, but everything else was something that only made Zaos feel pissed. Because of a single being with notions of grandeur who probably wanted to take over the world, Milliendra couldn’t be a normal child, Ameria died, and Drannor was set on a path of revenge. However, Zaos couldn’t just put all the blame onto him. He also had to consider the stupid actions of the previous kings that used the followers of the demon god to create focus amulets and ostracized his people. It seemed like Zaos was in the middle of a war where both sides only had stupid people. The demon god wanted revenge, and the people of the current era lived their lives believing that their predecessors were absolutely justified in their actions.

“So annoying…” Zaos thought while he felt his blood boiling. “Why can’t people just accept each other and the things they have? Why do they only feel good when they think they stand above others?”

When people begin to think like that, they don’t realize that it only made them look small and pathetic… making the others look uglier or inappropriate for their own self-image to be imposed. For a moment, Zaos began to think that humans were so despicable that they didn’t deserve to live… but then he corrected his thinking because most people don’t try to stand above the others with lies… and because that was probably the thinking that the demon god followed.
