Shinobi From Hell

Chapter 226 - Burning Skull

As Evelyn chewed on the meat her eyes traveled sidewards to Verona who seemed to be fast asleep.

"This may be a bit abrupt. But what do you think slavery is?" Klautz asked, tearing off another chunk of meat.

"Ha… That's"

She laughed awkwardly but ended up continuing anyway.

"Slavery is the price that one pays for the lack of knowledge and sometimes strength."

Klautz nodded in acknowledgment.

One thing that Klautz wholeheartedly agreed, was the fact that if the ninjas were to take him to their village again, Klautz would make an effortless escape.

Why? He wasn't able to do it in his past life, wasn't he? The basic difference between his past life and the current one was the fact that he had knowledge and wisdom of many things.

It wasn't too out of one's guess that one who would be recently summoned to a new world would lack knowledge of the same. That was the newbie's greatest weakness and that was what the ninjas used to make them fall into slavery.

One must note that newbies falling into slavery due to a 'lack of strength' was rare. Since the powerhouses cannot act as they pleased because of the political implications it would have.

"Then, what do you think love is?"

Evelyn held onto her chin as she thought the question properly.

"Love is a luxury. And just like every other luxury, not everyone can afford it."

As those words left her mouth her life flashed across her mind. Her father was alive indeed, and she could have had his love. But alas, any form of kinship between the daughter-father pair would only incite the stepfamily to torture her more. No matter how she saw it she couldn't afford to be loved as that would only create more hate for her.

As time passed by her father fell out of love for her pitying her for all she had to face. The father couldn't afford to love his daughter nor could she afford to have the love of the father. Their circumstance had brought them into a state of pseudo poverty.

Klautz nodded again as he contrasted those words with his own life.

Wasn't it the same for him?

In his past life, no one loved him for he couldn't afford it. After all, he had nothing to his name. He was just a slave… a ninja. No one knew his name, let alone bear any feelings of kinship towards him.

He might have received a lot of love in his second life but that was only because he was worthy of it. But unlike him, not everyone had the luxury to be loved in the world of hell.

"One last question. Whom do you hate the most?"

"Of course, my stepfamily and… the ninjas."

Klautz's ears twitched upon hearing the word 'ninja'. Was it kinship that he felt? The enemy of an enemy is one's friend. Klautz had always thought that it was a foolish sentiment. But now he was having second thoughts.

'If not for those two, my life would have been blissful.' Evelyn thought.

His stepfamily had broken her when she was alive back on earth. But thanks to her summoning she broke free of it. Everything would have been right… she would have retained her freedom forever if not for the intervention of the ninjas.

"Splendid~"

"Do you want to destroy them?" Klautz asked with his eyes glistening.

"Of course I do."

"Then shouldn't you cooperate with me?"

"How does it matter? I am going to die anyway."

Evelyn shrugged, causing Klautz to laugh out aloud.

"Ha Ha. Give me a reason not to kill you."

Evelyn pondered for a moment as she thought it out. But nothing substantial came to her mind. Meanwhile, Klautz took out his blade and kept it on her neck. But neither did she flinch nor did she move. It was as if she couldn't even feel the blade.

Klautz's blade was a spirit sword and unlike the cold metallic blades, his one was indeed different to touch. But who knows? Was it ignorance or a feeling of helplessness that caused Evelyn to not react?

"Let's see. How about my body?" she proposed.

But Klautz stumbled in shock. His jaw fell slack as he took a step back.

"Let me make it clear. You are not my type."

"Is that so? That's quite a pity. I believe that you are not gauging me with the right eyes." Evelyn continued. "Let me show you something to prove my point."

Evelyn chuckled as a smile bloomed on her face. The blade on her neck was as if non-existent.

Evelyn searched her inventory as she bit her lips. The fear of death had long left her soul as she had accepted her helplessness and her will to live was broken.

She took out a white skull of the shape of a human.

She reached out and handed the skull to the confused Klautz. Klautz retrieved his blade and held onto the skull, checking it out for anything unusual.

"This was the guy who had lecherous intentions towards me. He was in the same safe point as I was. So I had to kill him to prevent him from raping me."

"I see," Klautz whispered as he turned the skull around to check its back. It had a hole there where the skull seemed to have cracked open. It was enough to give an idea as to how the guy was killed.

"Some people sure have weird tastes," Klautz thought as he tossed the skeleton into the burning fire.

"Why burn it?" Evelyn asked without even realizing that the words had left her mouth in the abruptness of the moment.

She tilted her head to the side as she pondered on it.

"Isn't it fun to watch it burn? Even monkeys leave behind their bones, you know? His death ended up being worse than a monkey.".
