"What are you saying trying to defend him when it is clear he is bullying you in his house," Jasmine muttered angrily despite Jackson signalling her not to talk.
"If you won't let him abide by my rules then why don't you take him out of my house?" Mr Avans said his gaze focused on the fuming Jasmine.
"Besides even though he leaves it won't be a big loss to me since I don't want a son-in-law who can't endure a little discomfort…,"
"That's not…,"
"Jasmine, that is ok. I am fine. I can handle this," Jackson said in a serious tone. He was certain Jasmine interference will only make Mr Avans angrier. Jackson shifts his gaze back to Mr Avans.
"I wasn't brought up all pampered so that means a little discomfort is nothing to me…,", Jackson trailed in a firm tone.
"As long as it is father-in-law who wants it I can do anything, exception is breaking up with Jasmine or doing anything that breaks the law," Jackson sternly make his stance known from the beginning in case Mr Avans had the idea of breaking him and Jasmine up.
"It's now you are talking and know that I won't go easy on you just because my daughter likes you. No matter how hard she nags and quarrels with me for your sake, I won't change my mind about you so I advise that you get yourself ready for what is ahead," Mr Avans said in a fierce tone.
"And don't ever call me father-in-law and neither should you call my wife mother-in-law because we haven't approved of you yet," Mr Avans warned. Jasmine's frown deepened hearing her father's warning that was more like a threat.
"I have taken correction uncle and I am more than ready to learn from you as long as I can make you approve my relationship with Jasmine," Jackson said in a calm tone.
"Remember the words you said now. Don't go back on your words later by complaining that I am cruel," Mr Avans said ass he threw the newspaper in his hands on the glass table in front of them.
"Father, why does it sound like you are planning to give him laborious work to do…,"
"Whatever I plan to do with him is none of your concern so keep quiet," Mr Avans ordered.
"You can sit down now," Mr Avans finally said the words they have wanted to hear for a while now.
"Thank you uncle," Jackson said as he dropped the shopping bags close to where he sits.
"Treating my father so nicely won't make him like you a little more, I have been his daughter all my life so I know him more than you do. Heed my advice," Jasmine whispered into his ears.
"The in-laws are always right as long as they don't pass the boundary so relax because I have got this," Jackson said as he tapped her right thigh. He instantly composed himself when he saw that her parents' attention was focused on him.
"Uncle, Auntie, I got these gifts for you within the short period we had. Jasmine never told me in advance that we were gonna come and visit you so I didn't have enough time to prepare the gifts," Jackson said as he pushed the blue and white shopping bags to Mr Avans while he pushed the red and yellow shopping bags towards Mrs Avans front.
"The gifts might be lacking but it contains my deepest sincerity so please accept them. I promise to bring something better than this when next I visit," Jackson said as he nervously waited to hear what will be their response. He was so anxious that Mr Avans will reject his gifts.
"Whether or not the gift is lacking it doesn't matter. What matters is that we appreciate your kind gestures to get us gifts. We appreciate it," Mrs Avans who knew her husband like the back of her hands beat him to speak first.
He wasn't able to say whatever he had in mind since his wife spoke for the both of them.
For once mum does something that makes me very proud of her. This is great. How I wish she will continue leaving father speechless so that Ice Prince will have a smoother sail.
Jasmine thought smiling within. Jackson sitting beside her noticed the slight change in her expression and couldn't help but wonder what was responsible for it.
Just then, they heard approaching footsteps coming towards the sitting room. Everyone in the room including the three maids standing at different positions in the room all focused their attention on the direction of the entrance.
"Lizzy, Alfred!" Jasmine remarked in excitement, standing up to welcome the newly arrived guest.
The first person she embraced was Elizabeth. The elated Elizabeth hugged her refusing to let go.
"I will save my scolding for later only because Dad and mum are here so don't you dare think you are free from me," Elizabeth said still maintaining her radiant smile.
"Let's wait and see how you will scold me," Jasmine said playfully as she pulled out of her embrace.
"Brother-in-law, you are glowing from head to toe, I can see that Lizzy took excellent care of you," Jasmine teased as she hugged Alfred. Their hug didn't last long.
"Jasmine, you are teasing me. I am afraid Liza will scold me when we get home…,"
"Scold you when you get home? How will she scold you? I really want to know how she will scold you," Jasmine said teasingly temporarily forgetting that their parents are here.
"Jasmine, stop teasing your sister and follow me to the dining room to see whether the dining table is set," Mrs Avans now standing said as she approached the direction of the dining room.
Jasmine followed her mother to the dining room.
It was after Jasmine left that they realised that Jackson was present there.
"Wow, Jackson you are here?" Elizabeth exclaimed not able to hide her surprised expression.
