Under the Veil of Night

Chapter 444 - Lima School

Laura's Mansion

Days passed quietly as the situation in the city didn't change much. There was barely any progress within the short time frame, but things have started to stabilize. For both Laura and Kanae, they just used this time to the fullest to do their work and spent time with each other.

Looking towards her sister, Laura didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Her sister had just finished a table full of food before she had to run to the bathroom because of a stomachache. While chuckling, she proceeded to clean up the plates on the table.

After several days, the news of her radical decision no longer interested the media so much. Many other pieces of news started to pop up and take the headlines, replacing her matter. Rather than feeling sad, Laura was feeling relieved because she no longer had to be pestered by the reporters so much.

"Sis, have you finished?" Laura asked loudly.

"Wait a minute," Kanae ran back to the dining room again and saw that the table was already cleaned up. "Aw, did you put away the cake too?"

"Sis, you already ate too much," Laura rolled her eyes. "I put the cake in the refrigerator for a brunch snack later. You're going to stay at home for the rest of the day, right?"

Kanae nodded. Master Rudy asked her to rest her body adequately after the many months of intense training, so her training regimen always changed every few days. It just so happened to be her day to rest today so she didn't plan on going over to his place.

"How's the condition of the company so far?"

"It's pretty good. My new position as the head of the Nali Family gives the company more publicity. The operations are growing bigger and bigger," Laura smiled widely. "Brother Jason asks me to find a suitable factory for the company to expand, so I'm rather busy right now."

"I know a few good factories, but their location is a bit complicated," Kanae smiled wryly. The ones she knew were those located in Black Street. Normal people would think twice before going there because the streets were not always safe. Rather than risking their lives, smart people would avoid the area.

Laura frowned at the suggestion her sister gave to her. It was not like she didn't consider them, but she didn't have anyone who could possibly work there. Besides, women were usually the ones working in a sweets factory. To ask women to work in that area was the same as asking them to seek death.

"I'll just find some factories in a decent location. Brother Jason says that he's going to introduce some to me," Laura replied.

Kanae nodded. "Are you going to apply for school next semester?"

Laura shook her head and sat down leisurely. "The certificate from my school overseas is already enough for me not to continue school here. I only attended Nolen School C because I want to stay with you, Sis."

"Geez, you don't have to do that, you know," Kanae sighed. She ruffled her sister's hair before leaning in, letting Laura's head support a bit of her weight.

"I couldn't spend time with you during the time I was away for school overseas," Laura pouted. "I might search for a good university next year after the situation becomes more peaceful, but not now. I want to spend more time developing my company."

"I know. You're free to do whatever you want, little brat," Kanae laughed. She was very clear about the dream that Laura had since she was young. In addition, the talent that Laura had for academic studies was far greater than hers even though Laura rarely showed it. If not because of her excellence in her studies, she would have never gotten the offer to attend that prestigious school.

"I'm not little!"

"You're younger than me, so you'll forever be little," Kanae smirked.

Laura glared at her sister. "I didn't wish to be born later than you."

"That's the fact, just accept it, little girl."

"You meanie," Laura crossed her arms as she thought about something. "What about you, Sis? Do you want to continue high school next semester? Nolen School C closed down because of the attack, so there's no school for the time being, but I was thinking that you still want to finish school."

"I'm not sure myself," Kanae answered.

"Why? With your scores, you can get into almost any school in this city."

Kanae laughed. "I'm just not interested in studying at school anymore."

Laura frowned hearing her sister's reply. She then suddenly recalled the headlines of one of the newspapers that she got this morning. She didn't really follow the news, but it was quite interesting, so it caught her interest. Compared to the other newspapers, this one always published their articles faster than the others, so she was pretty sure that this news would fill all the headlines in the coming days.

"Sis, have you heard about the new school that finished its reparation yesterday night?" Laura grinned.

"There's a new school that underwent reparation?"

"Yes," Laura turned the television on. "This one, Sis."

The television was showing a video of a large nearby building. Some construction trucks were still there, but the buildings could be said to be finished. The reporter was looking towards the building with awe all over his face.

"…This school is commonly known as the best school in this city that specializes in educating young masters and misses from prestigious families. Besides those people with high social status, this school also allows special students who have the letter from the government to apply. Mind you, their quota is very limited.

Last night, the school's representative, Ferdinand Mowlem, gave surprising news that this school's reparation was finished. The project started around a year ago, which shows that their construction team worked at incredible speeds. Right now, the school board wants to express its intention of letting former as well as new students attend the school in the coming semester…"

Laura saw that her sister's attention was fully focused on the television. She glanced at the clock. "I'm going to do some light exercise before going to work, Sis. See you later."

"Yeah... Take care, Laura," Kanae forced a smile out of her mouth.

Laura nodded before walking away and taking out her phone, making a call to get the preparations done for the meeting. At the same time, she changed into her training clothes as she needed to exercise her body regularly.

Kanae returned her attention to the television.

Lima School…

How long has it been since the last time she heard this accursed name? This was the name that was fully embedded in her bones because of the painful memories from nearly two years ago. The memories of how she earned the title as a Legend of the Street along with the death of countless people.

That school was the very first place she was forced to become a cold-blooded killer.

That school was also where many people died, giving them a massive grave without a name.

That incident was the one that give birth to a completely different her, forcing her to use her ability to the limit. Everyone who survived the incident wouldn't have second thoughts of going there again.

The reason was very simple: for them, that place was none other than hell.

Kanae closed her eyes as every fiber of her body recalled the incident very clearly. The smell of blood, the never-ending sense of danger, and the threats that lurked at every corner---they were commonplace in that building.

She was fine when seeing that place in ruins, but seeing the exact same copy of the place from before evoked her memories once again. The deep-seated fear that resided within her body forced her to return back to that time two years ago, recalling everything that she thought she had buried deep inside her mind.

The experience that forged and changed the fate of numerous people.. Everything started from this one place: Lima School.
