When Sheng Yize got to the hospital, it was well after dark.

An Xiaxia had told him she was going shopping with Su Xiaomo that afternoon and she hadn’t come back after that.

He then got the news that Brother An had had an accident.

He wasted no time in getting to the hospital as quickly as he could. The first thing he saw was An Xiaxia huddled on a hospital bench with a pale face and red eyes.

He went up to An Xiaxia and stroked her hair, whispering, “How’s Brother An now?”

An Xiaxia looked up and saw who it was. Her lips moved and she said in a heaving, high-pitched voice, “I don’t know… Sheng Yize, it’s all my fault… I’m so scared… What if something happens to my brother…”

She would never forgive herself.

Sheng Yize already heard what had happened and there was nothing he could do except feel sorry for her.

He could only wrap his arms more tightly around her.

“Xiaxia, don’t say that. It’s not your fault. The other driver did this…”

An Xiaxia fought back her tears, but her eyes were still misty, as if tears would roll down her cheeks as soon as she blinked.

“Cry if you want to. You don’t have to force yourself. There, there…” Sheng Yize consoled her in a soft voice, trying to distract her. “Are you hungry? How about I get you something to eat first?”

An Xiaxia shook her head. With what was going on, she had lost all her appetite.

Sheng Yize held her hand and sat there waiting with her in the corridor until well into the night.

The light above the operating room finally turned off.

The attending doctor was an old acquaintance of Papa An’s and the two talked briefly. Papa An then thanked the doctor, looking relieved.

“Your brother is alright now. The operation went well and he should wake up tomorrow morning.”

The following morning.

An Xiaxia sat by An Yibei’s bed, almost too anxious to blink.

The early morning sunlight filled the room. Despite An Yibei’s sickly pale complexion, his chiseled face still looked handsome.

His eyelashes then fluttered; the light seemed to have dazzled him. He narrowed his eyes first before he slowly opened them.

“Brother! You’re finally awake!” As soon as he regained consciousness, he heard An Xiaxia pounce on him and rejoice.

The smile on his face was almost undetectable. He said in a husky voice, “Hm… Xiaxia.”

“I’m sorry… I won’t run away from home again…” An Xiaxia apologized, subdued. “It was all my fault, otherwise you would never have had this accident…”

“You’re not to be blamed for this,” said An Yibei blandly.

“Huh?”

“You’re my little sister and I would never blame you,” An Yibei said matter-of-factly, which made An Xiaxia freeze on the spot.

Her tears came so suddenly this time and she burst out crying.

“I’m sorry… I’m sorry… Brother, I’m coming home. I’m coming home with you…”

Sometimes, forgiveness could make one sadder than being reprimanded.

For the first time in her life, An Xiaxia felt that she couldn’t be a child forever. She had been sheltered by her family all these years, which had enabled her to live this carefree life.

She wanted things to stay that way, but time would carry on no matter what.

She had to learn to grow up and face the real world.

An Yibei frowned and wiped her tears while complaining, “Can you stop crying already? Gosh, wipe your nose… An Xiaxia, I’ll disown you as my sister if you keep crying! You look so awful you’re going to make me cry…”

Sheng Yize stood at the door, watching the two in silence.

An Yibei darted his eyes this way and that. He then spotted Sheng Yize and suddenly grinned. Turning around, he shot a most difficult question at An Xiaxia. “Xiaxia, which one is more important to you, your brother or your boyfriend?”
