The Devil's Sweetheart

Chapter 261 - War

While driving home, Nash suddenly remembered he forgot to talk about something important with Enger ''Kurt is in New York.''

''So?'' Enger asked, raising his brow.

''His purpose is to catch a Hacker, but I think he didnot disclose the actual purpose of getting transferred to New York. My wild guess, he is after us. A new resident has joined next toLandon's house. Although nothing strange has happened with the Cross hospital CEO, I feel trouble brewing. It's not a mere coincidence, Enger. If a small clue slips into Kurt's hand, he will pull out all the strings. We were lucky to get the hands-on Jonathon before he reached the FBI.''

"He wouldn't know. But for safer side, ask Landon and Mason to be a little careful.'' Enger thought for a while and then added. ''Also ask them to run a campaign around the city. Conduct a free health check-up on behalf of Cross hospitals. Even if Kurt tries to throw dirt to pull some strings, he will have to bite his shoe.''

''Good idea.'' Nash nodded.

....

It was dark in the night when the car reached the entrance gates, and the mansion was brightly lit up. Enger and Nash stepped down the car and strolled into the house. Heavily guarded, not a single soul can trespass into this place quickly, and Enger made sure of that. ''I am going into Winter's room. Ask aunt Milana to bring dinner to her bedroom.''

''Fine.'' Nash nodded and straight away walked into the kitchen to inform.

Enger opened the bedroom door and paused his footsteps as his gaze shifted to the woman lying on the bed. A bright, cheerful girl once has turned into a woman he can't recognize now. Enger knew he is solely responsible, but he doesn't have a choice.

With a sigh, he walked towards the bed and gently caressed her cheeks. Winter shot open her eyes at the familiar touch. ''Why are you here?'' She spat out, swatting his hand away furiously.

''I thought you were missing me,'' Enger replied with a shrug.

''Get out of my room.'' Winter turned her head, disgusted by his face. A lone teardrop fell descended from her temple and to the pillow. There is only hatred for this monster. Loving him was a mistake, and forcing him into a marriage was the biggest sin she committed. If only she had listened to her cousin and didnot made that deal five years back, she would be flying free like a bird. Winter thought she could make Enger fall in love with him at least after marriage, but she was wrong. He has long given his heart to someone else. The irony was that a monster capable of falling in love. Enger didnot even take into account that he has grown up with Winter since childhood. He has ruined her life. Escaping from this place was long forbidden. Enger Cassius Lennox does what he wants until he gets what he wants. Winter has accepted the truth that he would never reciprocate her feelings.

''Are you chasing me_''

He ended his thoughts when a woman knocked on the door and entered the room with a food trolley. ''Hello, Mr. Lennox.''

''How are you, aunt Milana?'' Enger asked as he grabbed a spoonful of soup and put it close to Winter's mouth. Without a word, Winter opened and gulped it. She doesn't have a choice. She has spent her entire childhood with him, but still, she cannot understand his character fully.

''I am good, Mr. Lennox.'' Milana smiled, but internally, she cursed him with the ill-spoken words she learned on the internet. Monsters are not made. They are born. The definition is well suited for Enger Cassius Lennox. But Milana didnot dare to voices her thoughts. If she does, her head would be his breakfast for tomorrow.

''Aunt Milana, are you scolding me again?'' Enger asked, wiping the stain on Winter's mouth with the tissue.

"'I__I No. Mr. Lennox. I want to live peacefully.'' Milana muttered, taking a guilty peek at him. 'How did this psycho know that I am scolding? Whatever! If not scolding, should I praise this bummer?'

''Good that you know.''

Brushing off her evil thoughts to kill him, Milana arranged the emptied dishes onto the trolley. ''Do you want any other thing, Mr. Lennox?'' Milana asked before leaving.

''A peace of mind,'' Enger said.

''Sure, Mr. Lennox. I will leave right away.'' Milana hurried away in an instant. Who would like to spend time with you, psycho? She pitied Winter from the depth of her soul. Since Milana has been catering to Winter, her condition is getting worse day by day, although she has been feeding her well. God knows what happened to that child.

As Milana walked out, Winter looked at Enger and spoke in a whisper. ''Are you feeding me slow poison?'' As healthy as she was, suddenly turning sick, Winter can only guess it is something to do with Enger.

''What made you think that?'' Enger chuckled with curiosity.

''Even if I die, Leena will never become yours,'' Winter said.

''She is already mine, just that I need to bring her home.'' He calmly replied. Enger was brewing with spite but composed himself. Although he tried to act nice towards this woman, she is waking up the monster in him, touching his bottom line. ''Sleep tight.'' Enger rubbed her head and walked out before he lashes out on her.

Winter looked at the retreating back with a smirk. Did he overlook whose hands Leena is in, or did he forget about the past events? He would chop him into pieces if he lay a finger on her.

Closing her eyes, Winter drifted off to sleep.

...

Standing beside the door, Nash waited for Enger to arrive.

'What's with Winter's status.'' Enger asked, closing the door. ''What did the doctors tell?''

''She can survive hardly for a month,'' Nash replied with a heavy heart.

''Good.'' Enger nodded. He has been waiting for the day.

''It's been three years you have been feeding her. Aren't you concerned about her at least once? She has been with you since your childhood, and Winter's father raised you.'' Nash asked. It pained him to digest the news of her ill health. Winter is the only friend he has other than Enger. If he has to choose between Enger and Winter, he will close his eyes and say, Enger. He has given him a life. So, he didnot object to anything he asked for.

''Everything is fair in love and war, Nash. Winter forced me into marriage because she loves me. I am forcing her to the cessation of life because I love Leena. There should be no traces of Winter by the time I meet Leena.'' Enger sternly declared and walked into his bedroom.

He opened the walk-in-closet and unlocked another door where the chamber was filled with graffiti. It's his passion, and painting Leena on his walls has become a part of his life since childhood. The stoic face he put in front of everyone eased up. ''How are you, Leena? I missed you.'' With a smile, he touched the painting of a little girl he solely painted.

Enger then opened the pictures that he got from Nash. His blood boiled to see her smiling at the person he loathed. The girl of his dreams was so close yet far away. When he thought he could reach her finally, he was tied up to Winter in the name of marriage, and before he got rid of this woman, Leena tied a knot with that bastard.

"Wang Devin, even if it meant war, I will take my beloved away from you.. You cannot stop me.''
