“No.”
The soldier immediately rejected Li Ran’s proposal.
Li Ran did not know if she should laugh or cry.
She could only continue to persuade him.
“If we let things stay the way they are, the both of us will die. Since there is a glimmer of hope, why don’t we act on it?”
As the soldier hacked a zombie that came close to them, he fell into deep thoughts.
It was true that they needed to do something, but there was nowhere safe for her to hide. If he failed his mission, all his efforts would be in vain.
How could he possibly trust Li Ran?
“Don’t kill me! I’m human, I wasn’t bitten!”
Suddenly, a man walked towards the two of them.
The soldier pointed his knife at him and was ready to kill.
The man slightly twisted his neck to soothe the discomfort on his body. Then, he looked at the soldier and said, “Can you protect me? I can even be of help to you!”
Li Ran was silent. There were really no signs that the man was bitten.
The soldier also stayed quiet. He was wary of the man’s intentions and signaled with his eyes for him to leave.
Upon being rejected, the man was filled with anger and his face turned red.
“It’s because I’m a man, isn’t it? That’s why you refused to protect me, right? I’m not as weak as that woman! I’m also a human! Why won’t you protect me?!”
“My mission is not to protect you,” the soldier replied without any hesitation.
The man felt like he had just heard the biggest joke of the century. How ridiculous. A soldier had no obligation to protect the people?
“I don’t care. I’m going to follow you whether you like it or not. Did you know that I almost lost my life? If you don’t protect me, I’ll cause a commotion and attract the zombies here.”
Li Ran was getting a headache.
‘How low can people get?’
The soldier had a lot on his plate. He needed to keep an eye out for zombies and the man. The man may be hiding the fact that he was bitten and turn on them unexpectedly.
“How heartless can you soldiers be? You kill without distinguishing between humans and zombies. It’s so cruel! I came here even though I knew that you would reject my request. Who cares about that? I’m already prepared! Either we live together, or die together!”
The man said righteously and seemed to be proud of himself.
Earlier, he was fighting off a zombie from another side and other soldiers saw him. The soldiers killed the zombie in two shots.
However, people began panicking. What if he was infected during the scuffle?
They could not take any chances.
Although the man was angry, there was nothing that he could do about it. He had to leave the area.
Fewer and fewer people remained. Some of them spotted Li Ran and ran towards her at lightning speed.
They did not say anything but their motive was obvious. If they stayed close to her, their chances of survival would increase.
Suddenly, a woman was tackled by a zombie. She resisted fiercely and cried out in fear, “Help! I beg you! Help me!”
Li Ran took out her pistol and handed it to the soldier.
“Kill it!”
The soldier was stunned.
However, after taking the gun, he immediately shot the zombie.
The woman pushed the zombie’s corpse away and ran towards them while crying.
“You really only care about women, don’t you? Do you think that all men can fight against the zombies? You overestimate me, brother. Just treat me as a woman, okay?”
The man was bewildered and would not stop talking.
A horde of zombies was attracted by the woman’s cries. The soldier took a deep breath and smiled bitterly, “Miss Li, you might have to take care of yourself now. Take the gun and run. Hide somewhere safe.”
