Adopted Soldier

Chapter 18 - Amnesia

When Carlo heard Alex's report his mind went blank for a moment, he gripped his smartphone hared before suddenly bursting out. "Are you sure Alex! Are you sure Rachel's father is Dan Regius?!"

"Affirmative, I have seen his picture place in an altar, apparently the family thinks he's dead." Carlo had mixed feelings after hearing the news, that the family his comrade was looking for turns out to be living in his homeland.

"So Dad how should I proceed? Do I tell the family that he's still alive, or do I tell them nothing? Why didn't Instructor return home in the first place?" Carlo sighed over the phone.

"Dan Regius can't remember anything aside from his name and that he has a family. He can't even remember the names of his family members, nor does he remember what they look like, he just knows he has a family still waiting for him." This new information made Alex clench his fist. He wasn't sure why but he felt angry.

"Then Dad why weren't you able to help him find his family? With your resources and with Instructor Luke's abilities, finding his family shouldn't pose much of a problem? Did you do this to keep Instructor Regius from leaving the squad?" When Carlo heard Alex's accusative statement he got angry.

"How dare you say that to me, Alex! Do you think I'm that kind of man?!" Hearing his Dad shout at him Alex was able to calm his mind.

"I'm sorry I was out of line." Alex apologized sincerely. Carlo was able to calm down after hearing Alex's sincere apology.

"No, it's alright that just shows how much you care for Dan's situation. The reason I couldn't find the family immediately was because the memory of him having a family just recently surfaced a month ago. How much time do you think fulfilling his wish to find his family would take if the only clue we have is his name? In this whole wide world, there are approximately 245 people with the exact same name. 80 of these people have gone missing on the battlefield, and 3 of them have almost the exact same profile as Dan's. All this information I have acquired after the whole month of searching, if you just gave me a week more, even if you didn't accidentally found his family I would've already found them myself."

Knowing his dad had tried his best to find out where Instructor Regius's family was, Alex, sighed in relief. "So how should I proceed with the situation?"

Carlo pondered for a while before replying. "For now we need to slowly understand the situation in Dan's household. We need to see if the idea of their dead husband and father suddenly appearing will not have a negative effect on them. For now, just have a simple dinner with them and don't be bothered by the new information. We will discuss further plans back home. I will brief Dan at the current situation and make a fake back story on how you two met."

"Roger that," Alex affirmed and ended the call. Alex returned to the room where he left Kumiko and Joseph.

"So done with your call?" Kumiko questioned the returning Alex.

Alex learning all this new information regarding the Regius household felt weird. Still, a mission is a mission Alex nodded his head. "Yes, I just called my dad."

"Your dad huh?... I better talk to him about your relationship with my daughter?" Alex tilted his head confused at what Kumiko said... 'My relationship with her daughter? Is she talking about me being her friend?'

"If it is about my relationship with your daughter I already told him." When the mother and son heard Alex they started laughing, Kumiko slapped Alex's back.

"Good kid, you work quick! Now let's go and have dinner that daughter of mine should be finished cooking." Joseph slapped Alex's back as well.

"Hey, so your dad already knows... Doing things so decisively such are the perks of youth."

'What is Joseph talking about? Perks of youth? Isn't he just a few years older than me?' Alex couldn't comprehend what was happening in this conversation so he simply decided to stay silent.

The three were walking towards the dining table and what awaited them there was Rachel placing a bunch of food on the table. Alex looked at Rachel bewildered by her appearance not wearing her uniform. She was wearing a pink tank top and short shorts while wearing an apron. Noticing Alex who was looking at her so intently Rachel started to blush.

"What is it, captivated by my beauty again?" Alex for some reason couldn't get ahold of himself and nod his head dumbly. Seeing Alex's reaction made Rachel a bit happy, the fool was actually able to express such a dumbfounded expression.

Kumiko was smiling at the interaction between the two. "Hey now, what's with the feast? You even made your specialty chicken... So you're trying to impress your husband with your cooking?"

Rachel glared at her mother before answering. "I'm not trying to impress anyone, we just had some extra chicken laying there so I decided to use it. Also what husband? Like I said Alex is just a friend."

Joseph chuckled as he sat down. "Well did you know, brother-in-law here, already reported your relationship to his father."

When Rachel heard this, she approached Alex with a glare. "What did you tell your dad?"

'Did this guy, tell his dad I'm his girlfriend?! How cunning of him... Already proclaiming I'm his girlfriend so that when he introduces me to his dad, it would be awkward if I deny it."

Not knowing Rachel's inner thoughts, as usual, Alex answered honestly. "I told him that you're my friend. Was I wrong to say that?"

Rachel hearing Alex's answer was both disappointed and relieved, but the disappointment was more evident in her expression. "Well, that's good."

"What's good about that? You better step up your game if you want Alex here not to leave you.." Kumiko spoke while putting some rice in her bowl.
